Poe and Finn have had zero character arc or development, Rey is oddly, boringly light side, Ren is stereotype darkside, and the Rebellion/Resistance is starting over again. TLJ is a complete, scorched-earth reboot with only one film to fix it and bring closure. That is what Springfield meant. They didn’t have to land on an asteroid and almost be eaten by a giant worm to accomplish that feelingĪt the end of the day, when the narrative of TLJ has finished, absolutely nothing has happened with no story progression in this new trilogy. I understand the resistance never got away so basically flees the base in the beginning and was followed to another base that they flee in the end but in between that a whole lot happened. I just don’t understand the “nothing happened” argument when compared to the OT. Plus if Yoda came to Cloud City and fought Vader to allow time for Lando and Leia to escape while Luke used a prophetic level of force mastery to help realize their escape. Was all that happened in ESB so much more than TLJ? I mean in TLJ you have the equivalent of Vader killing the emperor to save Luke with Luke still refusing to joint him setting up a second showdown with Luke in the following movie. TFA was identical to ANH so the same happened in addition to killing off Solo and introducing an entire host of new characters.
Virtually nothing has happened except for killing off all ththe characters I loved growing up and replacing them with characters I don’t like nearly as much and no real villainous antagonist. I’m tapping out after the next one if they can’t manage to wrap it up.Ĭompared to Episode 4 and 5, episodes 7 and 8 are a huge mess. I could see Disney milking it for what it’s worth though. I couldn’t handle another 3 movies of Rey/Ren. A main character was stuck in carbonate, the main hero had his hand chopped off and soundly defeated, the rebellion was a mess, we had all to get closure on all the Luke/Vader dad stuff and we just found out that the person we thought was the baddest villain in the galaxy is really just an elaborate henchman to a new Emperor characterĪnd they actually wrapped it up in 45 minutes since the first hour and a half of ROTJ is worthless There isn’t any more to wrap up than where we left ESB. The new leader doesn't seem all that powerful and competent. It's not even well established that the First Order is this thing that's really to be feared.

All we seem to know is that Kylo saves her but then she spurns his offer for "union". Well, TLJ has a lot of parts moving Rey, Rebellion, Finn/Rose, Leia, Luke dying, sparks. Let's find out about Rey, let's see what she does. Now we have one "episode" to wrap up the start of a rebellion (spark/fires/blah) AND finish off the First Order. Probably the excellence of the original trilogy was that it seemed closed, finished.
